It’s a fantastic way to build up cardiovascular strength and endurance. It’s also great for burning calories.

Here are some ways to increase the calories burned during every workout. Instead of biking at the easiest level on a stationary bike, add resistance.

Your goal should be between 70 to 80 revolutions each minute to achieve the best calorie and fat burning level. Set the level of the machine appropriately.

You may also wish to add ankle weights, but you don’t want to make it so difficult that you must quit before going at least 30 minutes on the bike. Start by adding only one-pound ankle weights, then increase the weight level as you increase your strength.

Pushing through a full biking workout is essential to burning calories efficiently. Therefore, you don’t want to perform at your maximum speeds throughout the whole workout.

However, going at a speed that’s significantly faster for two minutes every ten minutes can create change in your workout that keeps it interesting. It can also make the rest of your workout feel less strenuous, as it’s a break from the high intensity.

You always want to consult your doctor when planning any workout program, though, especially one that is going to challenge your limits. Don’t spin your legs like you’re racing for your life.

Although spurts are often good for some bikers, you don’t want to try to go for extended lengths of time with a racing pace. That will tire you quickly and isn’t the best for maximum calorie burning.

Instead, pace yourself. After several sessions with a personal trainers, you may be able to learn when your body is working at its maximum fat level capacity.

Some biking machines even have a level for you to set for maximum calorie or fat burning. You want to bike at a moderate speed, not too fast and not too slow.

Most people think that riding a stationary bike is not going to help you lose much weight. If all you are going to do is sit and pedal for 30 minutes and not work up a sweat, then they would be right in their assumption.

But, if you are using biking interval spurts training, you will burn calories and lose weight. Interval training means that you do short, very intense spurts of exercise, followed by a longer time to recover.

Biking in intervals requires you to pedal as hard as you can for a period of about 10 seconds at first, followed by 60 seconds of resting time. This is how one should start out in the beginning.

Increase your intensive workout to 15 seconds, and then on to 20 seconds, giving yourself the 60 second rest between bursts of energy. Before you begin a program of interval biking, you need to be in the best physical shape that you can.

This is not something that beginners should take on. It may take weeks, or even months, of regular exercise before you are ready to try this.

Biking is one way to begin interval training as your first step. Older people and those that are less fit than some people can benefit from interval training, only at a slower, more modulated pace, instead of the “all out” kind of pedaling done by some athletes.

A workload that is a little above what a person may feel comfortable with will work just as well over time. As long as the short bursts are followed by a minute of downtime, the exercises are safe, even for the older population.

Stationary exercising is often thought of as boring, and it can be. To just sit and pedal mindlessly is mundane.

That is why interval training on your machine can be exciting and gratifying. Working those calories away, and seeing the results on the scale, will allow you to see your equipment in a whole new light.
